Thanks to urgings from street photog Sharron Demarest I entered the 19th edition of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award. On Sunday while out photographing eagles in southwest Florida Sharron called not once but twice. First she called to share that I won an honorable mention for my nature series. Then she called back again. She just discovered that I won the bigger prize, the Best in Category for Landscape and Seascapes. This series of images are posted above. This is a huge international contest for women photographers. Honored to be selected by jurist Barbara Davidson, three-time Pulitzer Prize and Emmy award-winning photographer/ director as well as past recipient of this award.

After considering a number of local South Florida artists, proceeds from a charitable donation were used to purchase the 22 large works from Phoenix. Phoenix is an award-winning, internationally collected nature and wildlife photographer. Each of the 22 fine art photographs measures 24 x 36 inches and is printed on metal. They are installed in two waiting rooms and four examination rooms. The works were selected from Phoenix’s “Sacred Trees,” “Landscapes” and “Winged Life” collections. “Reflecting the intersection of art and healing, Phoenix’s nature, fine art photographs transport viewers from the outside-in to a deep meditative place of peace and healing,” said Angelica Guckes, curator. Phoenix is passionate about nature photography and healing. “For me the importance of nature is far more than a scientific necessity for creating air, clean water and producing food. It is a sacred necessity for healing and bringing peace to the human soul. “It’s an honor to have my works as part of the Women’s Center at Cleveland Clinic and make a difference in women's lives, especially those who may be facing difficult times.” Top Images: Selected images installed in the two waiting rooms. Twenty-two pieces, measuring 24 x 36 inches, each were selected from the Sacred Trees, Landscapes and Winged Life collections.
My fine art photography was selected because it invites the viewer to be transported to the extraordinary beauty, peace and healing of nature. As you probably already know, I'm passsionate about nature photography. For me the importance of nature is far more than a scientific necessity for creating air, clean water and producing food. It is a sacred necessity for healing and bringing peace to the human soul. Top Image: Selected images installed in the two waiting rooms. Bottom Image: Images installed in the four examination rooms. Story Behind the Photo... Camping overnight at Middleton’s Fish Camp in central Florida, we’re the first pontoon boat on Blue Cypress Lake just before sunrise. This natural freshwater lake has the highest concentration of osprey in the world. As the pontoon boat is moving quickly, this Zen-like vision appeared through the early morning fog. The osprey are still roosting in their nests in cypress trees lining the lake’s edge. Also, honored that this piece has also been juried into the Business for the Arts of Broward, www.bfabroward.org/programs/art-stroll/ "Art & Stroll" Event. This special event of fine art, music, food is November 17th, 5 - 8pm, in downtown Fort Lauderdale's Las Olas. Just notified that "Inner Peace" received honorable mention in Broward Art Guild in Think Pink Exhibit. I titled this piece "Inner Peace" since that's exactly how I felt when I first saw this view. The light was falling fast and I was in my head with concerns about where I was going to spend the night. Driving back home from my artist residency at Great Smoky Mountains National Park I took a side trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. I pulled over to a parking lot to make reservations and couldn't get reception. Then a family arrived. They told me where to go, made reservations and as a bonus recommended a wonderful restaurant. Forever grateful for the lesson and blessings of grace in the form of helpful people.
Reception this Saturday, Oct 2, 4:30-8:30pm. Also to view and/or view online, https://art.browardartguild.org/category/think-pink. Or, simply contact me directly. |
